Trying to stop smoking

Trying to stop smoking? This simple tip could help you stop smoking right now

When I am working with clients who come for help to stop smoking I like to learn a lot about each individual’s personal reasons for smoking and the situations that they think that it “helps” them in. Since each session is tailored to an individual’s particular circumstances this information will help me offer my client the best personal result for them.

An important question will be “have you stopped or attempted to stop smoking before? Interestingly giving up cigarettes or food or any other addiction is not always a “straight line” experience where we make a final decision and immediately change. More often than not clients will have made a few attempts to stop before and it is how they describe the previous experience that will give me an important clue about why previous attampts may not have been effective.

Most clients will tell me that they have tried to stop in the past and the key is in the word “try.” That simple word is waiting to catch us out every time. Do you feel ready to give an important task to someone who will try? Wouldn’t you get a second opinion if the surgeon said he would “try” to perform a successful operation? However a simple change can have a profound effect on the chances of success. Instead of trying how much stronger will it be “make a choice” to stop smoking or “make a decision” to stop? As you say those words to yourself just become aware of the subtle change in your physiology and mental focus. You will have taken responsibility. This simple adjustment will help kick start the positive energy that will bring you closer to success. And don’t try it – just use it!

If you would like more information about how hypnotherapy can help you stop smoking and also help you make powerful changes in your life please feel free to call or email me and I will be happy to chat with you. roger@rogerfoxwell.co.uk 07970 218451

Can hypnosis and EFT help tremors and Dystonia?

Can hypnosis and EFT help tremors and Dystonia?

Last Saturday (21/04/12) I was engaged to present a workshop for the Dystonia Society in Glasgow. Paul King, the Chief Executive Officer of the society was first to talk about the valuable work the Dystonia Society does for sufferers of this neurological movement disorder and the latest developments in treatments and how to get help. This was followed by a fascinating presentation by Dr Ewen Kemp of Gartnavel Hospital in Glasgow covering the treatments he and his team offer to patients with this condition and how these various treatments can help. The final part of the afternoon was allotted to myself and Shiatsu and Qigong teacher Des Lawton to allow the members present to participate and learn more about how complimentary therapies can also help people to cope with these conditions. My presentation consisted of an overview of my speciality working with musicians and golfers suffering with focal dystonia and a demonstration of how hypnosis and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) can be used to bring relief and change, both physically and emotionally. Also many thanks to Dorothy Chisholm the Scottish Regional Officer of the Dystonia Society for inviting me to present my workshop at this “Living with Dystonia” day. Interestingly, by coincidence, three weeks prior to this presentation I had seen two clients who had been diagnosed with a Benign Tremor and an Essential Tremor. The issues we were working on were not directly related to the tremor but fascinatingly the Benign Tremor in the hands disappeared during hypnosis. My client with the Essential Tremor presented after three weeks a marked improvement in her whole body shaking, and from a very obvious neurological shaking during our first session, on the third session it was at times hard to notice that she had this condition. This type of improvement has previously been documented for clients in hypnosis. Also tremors have been known to diminish when working with EFT. This is much work still to be done in this area and although there is no known cure, hypnotherapy and EFT is an ideal way to help release tension and issues that may have been aggravating the condition. Once we have access to redirecting the neural pathways in the mind and body powerful possibilities really are, in my view, available to us. For more information on how Hypnotherapy and EFT could help with a wide range of issues please call me on 07970 218451 or email roger@rogerfoxwell.co.uk

Does hypnosis work?

Does hypnosis really work?

Although hypnosis is rapidly becoming more and more accepted as a complimentary therapy that can achieve rapid and lasting results there is still a certain resistance to the idea that it could actually work and is not just a some “hocus pocus” technique with little scientific or medical validation to back it up.

Hypnosis has been around now for well over 200 years and the term hypnotism was first used by the Scottish surgeon James Braid who successfully performed many operations using hypnosis when the only other choice of anaeasthetic was probably a bottle of whisky! Another famous figure who was to later develop its popularity was Sigmund Freud who first said that hypnotism was crucial to his newly discovered treatment psychotherapy. He then later changed his mind and stopped using hypnosis but some say that may have been because he wasn’t very good at it!

However hypnosis has never gone away and has developed and grown with much valuable research available on its use in medical and psychological settings.
Modern clinical hypnotherapy has brought positive and lasting changes to so many people’s lives that it really is a mainstream complimentary therapy. The best hypnotherapists will always be members of professional regulatory organisations that will have a high standard of ethics and responsibility designed to work in the best interests of the public. On top of that there is a wide range of scholarly papers showing the effectiveness of hypnosis for many issues. The link below will take you to some of those research papers covering such areas as smoking, pain control, weight loss, post surgery recovery, headaches and anxiety.

Why, if you are on Facebook, Twitter etc you could be practising Transactional Analysis!

Why, if you are on Facebook, Twitter etc you could be practising Transactional Analysis!

In 1964 Eric Berne published his best selling book “Games People Play” which demonstrated the point that in many of the daily interactions we are engaged in we are playing a game. To illustrate his point he used phrases such as “See what you made me do” or What would you expect from a man with a wooden leg?”

Berne categorised three states or roles that we could be “playing” at any given moment, The Parent, The Adult and The Child. According to Berne the Child in us is looking for what he terms “strokes” These are the nice friendly thoughts, words and gestures that give us a feeling of validation, being wanted or understood. Generally, inside all of us there is a part that wants people to recognise, love and like us and each time we get one of these “strokes” it generates a sense of self worth giving us that “feel good” experience.

So what happens each time someone “likes” your Facebook entry or thanks you for a retweet? You feel validated. This feeling occurs even before you are consciously aware of it because it is hard-wired into our psyche. Does it feel good to you when you “like” someone’s post or put up a positive comment? I am sure it does and why not?

These “strokes” are in NLP terms positive anchors that create an instant sense of well-being between the two parties. If we want the best in our communications whether personal, business or social how important is it to nurture that relationship and develop our social skills in all areas of our interactions with everyone? Obviously this is not an invitation to be insincere but an opportunity to enhance our communication skills. Just by using our awareness of how we feel when our post is “liked” on Facebook or our comment on Linkedin is appreciated can help us develop our social networking in a meaningful and enjoyable way. And remember we are not just social networking on the internet. Every communication we have is a form of social networking and developing that awareness and ability can only enhance our dealings with everyone we come into contact with and our confidence and enjoyment in all our communications.

Social skills and confidence are not naturally built in for everybody and past experiences can easily dent or even wreck personal self esteem and confidence but this can be regained and built up with the right help. If you would like to find out how my Success Coaching Programme using Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP could help enhance your personal and communication skills and your success in your business, personal and social life just call or email me and I will be very happy to discuss this with you.

How you can tame your “Monkey Brain” using Hypnosis and EFT

How you can tame your “Monkey Brain” using Hypnosis and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)

I have been using the term “Monkey Brain” with my clients for a while now as a metaphor for the part of our mind that is totally reactive to events and experiences in our lives. This part of us is reacting to almost every experience we have on a daily basis but because of the nature of this part of our brain it may not always be helping us make the best decisions. If you feel that you are regularly getting into and reacting to situations in a way that on hindsight you regret or is making you feel uncomfortable in any way this is most likely your “Monkey Brain” hijacking your cognitive thinking process. Unfortunately when this happens unless we have techniques in place to control our thought processes we will find it virtually impossible to mentally intervene quickly enough to make rational and effective choices.

My thinking behind the “Monkey Brain” metaphor was to find a way to help my clients develop a strategy that they could use at any time and in any situation and to learn how they could take control and switch from reactive decisions to measured responses when and where appropriate. Talking scientifically about how the part of our brain called the amygdala is hard wired to respond instantly to any situation perceived as dangerous by activating the “Fight and Flight” reaction can be too complex a thought process to help us make an “on site” change in our reactions. However by being able to instantly bring up this picture in our mind enables us to recognise which part of our brain is taking charge of our thinking. Although calling this response the “Monkey Brain” may not be a strictly accurate description of how the brain’s neural networks operate it does allow us to recognise and make choices much quicker and less reactively than might otherwise be the case.

Interestingly Dr Steve Peters the resident psychiatrist for the British Cycling team has just published an excellent book titled “The Chimp Paradox“. He uses a similar metaphor for this part of our brain that is quickly but not always wisely activated continually throughout the day. This book is well worth reading if you want to know more about how to manage your mind and the processes that are continually working in the background behind our conscious awareness.

So how might you recognise when this part of the mind is at work? Well it is running virtually all the time and can be affecting your relationships, self esteem, or levels of anger and many other aspects of your daily life. Why not just take a moment now, to reflect on how many reactive decisions and thoughts you may have had in the last 24 hours. This may well surprise you. Each time we get angry with another motorist or annoyed with someone we can almost instantly slip into a mindset that is totally fixed, out of control or unyielding. Anxiety and fear are all examples of this part of our brain activating when in most instances there is nothing happening that logically warrants such a strong response. When a truly fearful situation arises then that part will activate to protect us, but in our modern everyday life the majority of our everyday experiences do not need such a powerful emotional response.

Whether you suffer from anxiety, stress, anger, PTSD or other symptoms that may be preventing you from experiencing enjoyment in your life I can help free you from these old patterns and help you construct a much more fulfilling future. Using EFT and hypnosis can make rapid and powerful changes and help clear issues that have in the past seemed almost insoluble.

If you feel you deserve better and would like help in controlling your thinking patterns and processes then feel free to email roger@rogerfoxwell.co.uk or call me on 07970 218451 and I will be happy to discuss with you how my unique combination of practical techniques, Hypnotherapy, NLP and EFT could help you enjoy remarkable changes.

Complex PTSD can be helped with Hypnosis and EFT

Complex PTSD can be helped with Hypnosis and EFT

PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome) is more often than not linked with servicemen and women and the effects on body and mind from their experiences in combat. Although few of us can imagine the experience of being in a real battle situation many people are involutarily thrown into an emotional battle situation which they are least prepared for.

The term Complex PTSD came about from the recognition that PTSD symptoms could be triggered not only by a catachlysmic, or life threatening incident but also from the insideous drip, drip of constant negative stress in the workplace, school or home. A very good BBC article on this was posted in 2004 and is still very relevant so well worth reading. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3563450.stm

Workplace bullying was brought to the attention of the public in 1988 by Andrea Adams but it still takes place and victims may not even feel they have any right to redress or complaint feeling totally helpless against the power the bully holds over them. Often the person may not even realise they are being bullied and if not treated appropriately the quality of their life can be ruined for ever by the effect this may have on them. School bullying and domestic abuse, verbal and physical, come under the term Complex PTSD.

For a detailed and in depth review of PTSD with links and recomended books look at

http://www.bullyonline.org/stress/ptsd.htm#PTSD,%20PDSD%20and%20bullying

I regularly see clients with PTSD and using hypnotherapy and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) it really is possible to get help to clear or reduce the symptoms and regain one’s self esteem.

If you would like to discuss a particular issue with me just email roger@rogerfoxwell.co.uk or call me on 07970 218451

Erectile Dysfunction Part 2

Erectile Dysfunction Part 2

Since my last post on Erectile Dysfunction I have taken quite a number of calls from men with this issue. Sexual problems are often difficult to talk about especially with someone you don’t know. The feelings of shame and inadequacy that can go along with these issues only help to keep us from seeking the help available and without that help we run the risk of falling into a downward spiral as the knock on emotional effects become even harder to avoid. Then relationships may well begin to suffer and self esteem take a downward spiral. In fact the whole issue can then begin to take over one’s life.

The first thing I would say is that there is no shame in suffering from this any more than one would should feel of less value than with nay other physical or emotional issue. For some people there may be physical reasons for their inability to get or maintain an erection and like any physical issue we may have to learn how best to live a meaningful life with everything else available to us. However if all medical tests have been exhausted and there are no obvious physical problems then there is every chance that this can be helped very effectively.

The clients I have worked with in the last few months have virtually all resumed a pleasurable and rewarding sex life within just a few sessions. So the first step is to choose a therapy that you feel will be of benefit to you and an experienced practitioner that you can feel comfortable with. As far as I am concerned there is little out there that competes with the combination of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and hypnosis for fast and powerful lasting results. Over the years I have drawn together a wide range of techniques that work powerfully with EFT and hypnosis that are easy, effective and quick to use on a daily basis. For instance a vital issue to address with ED will be self confidence so how useful can you imagine it to be having the tools and techniques that will help keep that confidence high whenever and wherever you are on a daily basis.

In fact I work with ED very much as a performance nerves issue. I am using my performance enhancement techniques regularly with performers in all areas of sport and performing arts with success, and in my experience similar and appropriate techniques are the quickest and most effective way to get good results.

If you wanted to work on your golf score or had difficulty with presentations at work you would seek help to improve your confidence and self esteem. To build confidence one has to be prepared first to release any past issues that may be getting in the way. However my clients are often pleasantly surprised at how rapidly and effectively these past issues can be pinpointed and released. Once the understanding of where our old and outdated thinking patterns have come from we can then begin to replace them with a much more valuable and empowering approach.

To talk in confidence to me just call 07970 218451 and I will be happy to discuss the options available. If you feel more comfortable discussing the issues initially at an appointment then just call me or email and I will be happy to book a time for you.

Hypnosis Workshop at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire

Roger Foxwelll Hypnosis Workshop at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire

A big thank you today (13/02/11) to Mark O’Keefe, Principal Trumpet of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for inviting me to present a workshop to his students at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire. The workshop was an introduction on how Hypnosis, EFT and NLP can be used to enhance creativity and technique in study and performance.

Although understanding how tapping and developing a trance state to help improve performance and practise techniques can initially be something of a leap of the mind we had just one hour to explore a few of the ways to do this. However with just a few rounds of EFT tapping everyone was really beginning to get a feel for the opportunities and how this can be used on a daily basis to help with performance stress and creative development.

As you can imagine, playing the trumpet requires a lot of breath control and a lot of lung power. Using a variation of Gary Craig’s EFT “Restricted Breathing” technique within just a few rounds two of the students who volunteered were able to develop even further the invaluable techniques that Mark teaches so professionally. I have no idea how to play the trumpet but for someone who does, using EFT allowed them to literally and creatively tap into a part that knows how to learn highly effectively. As Lizzie, who volunteered to play said, “when I perform well it is as if another part of me has played almost without me being there”.

International pianist John Lill talks about reaching a state of awareness in his performing where he is almost watching himself play. Accessing this state of heightened awareness gives us the freedom to perform on another level. This is the point where the musicality and technique developed and passed on to students from a gifted teacher such as Mark O’Keefe virtually bypasses conscious thought and everything almost “plays itself”.

There are many ways to reach a heightened state of awareness and creativity, however for me EFT is one of the most effective and quickest ways to help spark the energy required to get closer to one’s full potential.

Hypnosis Clinic Glasgow

Hypnosis Clinic Glasgow

1.  A hypnosis clinic can be termed as a facility that is devoted to the “diagnosis and care” of outpatients.  As a clinician working with the techniques Hypnosis, Clinical Hypnotherapy, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) I have toyed with the idea of describing my offices as a Hypnotherapy Clinic.
However, although I am in the business of helping my clients resolve issues in their lives I am also passionate about offering my clients more than just the possibility of “diagnosis and care”. My goal is to help clients make changes that will not only release the issues that have been troubling them but also open possibilities of powerful change in their lives.
Which is why if you were passing by the door of my clinic as well as earnest and serious discussion you would also hear a lot of joy and a lot of laughter being expressed. This is not to say in any way that every issue is not treated with the respect and gravitas it deserves but having said that every client that comes through the door of my clinic, office, surgery or whatever you wish to call it is offered the tools and the opportunities to connect with and direct the quality of their own future.
On a daily basis I see clients come into my office looking nervous, upset, angry, lacking in confidence only to see them walk out an hour later smiling, relaxed and positive taking with them techniques and tools to help enhance the quality of their lives on a daily basis. This to me is the real purpose and aim of my work.
So if you would like to know more about the work I do at my hypnosis clinic Glasgow just call me on 07970 218451 and we can discuss how you could begin to discover the possibility of making some remarkable changes in your life.

Hypnotherapy and EFT can help with eating disorders

Hypnotherapy and EFT can help with eating disorders

As anyone in the therapy world will tell you eating disorders are one of the trickiest issues to deal with successfully. Anorexia and Bulimia are closely related but as well as having some difference in behaviour patterns (e.g.anorexics will starve and bulemics will purge) the mental mind set is also subtly different.
There is plenty of information available about anorexic and bulemic symptoms but having strategies that work and get results is the vital piece of the jigsaw needed to help sufferers with this challenging illness. To begin with, until the person is actually prepared to admit that they have a problem it is obviously extremely difficult to get any sort of therapy started however bad the situation. Since denial is a large part of the eating disorder mind set telling someone what they should or should not be doing will rarely see any lasting results and whilst anorexics are likely to pretend they are following the help offered, bulimics will tend to politely take all the information in and metaphorically regurgitate it at the earliest opportunity.

Anorexia and Bulimia will usually be found to have developed from a deeply stressful and emotionally charged past and these issues need to be worked through and released to leave a clear place to build up self esteem and inner confidence which is invariably the other block to a return to normal eating patterns.
Although there are schools of thought that point to genetics and misfiring brain structures however true this may be we can still make massive change with the best interventions to help reorganise our view of the world we live in and our relationship with it. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and Hypnosis are powerful ways to get behind the issues and help begin the process of getting real control in one’s life without having to use food as a way to make things bearable.
Medical diagnosis is as always vitally important. However if you would also like to know more about Hypnotherapy and EFT please call me on 07970 218451 or email roger@rogerfoxwell.co.uk for more information.
