How you can tame your “Monkey Brain” using Hypnosis and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
I have been using the term “Monkey Brain” with my clients for a while now as a metaphor for the part of our mind that is totally reactive to events and experiences in our lives. This part of us is reacting to almost every experience we have on a daily basis but because of the nature of this part of our brain it may not always be helping us make the best decisions. If you feel that you are regularly getting into and reacting to situations in a way that on hindsight you regret or is making you feel uncomfortable in any way this is most likely your “Monkey Brain” hijacking your cognitive thinking process. Unfortunately when this happens unless we have techniques in place to control our thought processes we will find it virtually impossible to mentally intervene quickly enough to make rational and effective choices.
My thinking behind the “Monkey Brain” metaphor was to find a way to help my clients develop a strategy that they could use at any time and in any situation and to learn how they could take control and switch from reactive decisions to measured responses when and where appropriate. Talking scientifically about how the part of our brain called the amygdala is hard wired to respond instantly to any situation perceived as dangerous by activating the “Fight and Flight” reaction can be too complex a thought process to help us make an “on site” change in our reactions. However by being able to instantly bring up this picture in our mind enables us to recognise which part of our brain is taking charge of our thinking. Although calling this response the “Monkey Brain” may not be a strictly accurate description of how the brain’s neural networks operate it does allow us to recognise and make choices much quicker and less reactively than might otherwise be the case.
Interestingly Dr Steve Peters the resident psychiatrist for the British Cycling team has just published an excellent book titled “The Chimp Paradox“. He uses a similar metaphor for this part of our brain that is quickly but not always wisely activated continually throughout the day. This book is well worth reading if you want to know more about how to manage your mind and the processes that are continually working in the background behind our conscious awareness.
So how might you recognise when this part of the mind is at work? Well it is running virtually all the time and can be affecting your relationships, self esteem, or levels of anger and many other aspects of your daily life. Why not just take a moment now, to reflect on how many reactive decisions and thoughts you may have had in the last 24 hours. This may well surprise you. Each time we get angry with another motorist or annoyed with someone we can almost instantly slip into a mindset that is totally fixed, out of control or unyielding. Anxiety and fear are all examples of this part of our brain activating when in most instances there is nothing happening that logically warrants such a strong response. When a truly fearful situation arises then that part will activate to protect us, but in our modern everyday life the majority of our everyday experiences do not need such a powerful emotional response.
